Avalon south (aka Old Avalon) is a very mature scenic course with plenty of old oak trees throughout the property. The grounds crew does an extremely good job keeping the course in great playing shape. The tee boxes are big & beautiful and the fairways are outstanding and always mown and in perfect condition.
The greens, however, need a little work. There are few bare brown spots but I attribute that to the age of the course and the abundance of trees providing too much shade cast on to them ( its only a few greens in that condition),the rest are perfect. Most of the greens are very undulating with some slope and they're a few two-tiered greens. It's a pretty challenging course to putt well on (expect a lot of 3 putts), but they are easy to reach without alot of hazards blocking them.
Overall this is a great course for any golfer, beginners to low handicappers. I highly recommend anyone who has never been there to go as soon as they can. The course is owned by the city of Warren but leased to John Kouvas who I understand is way behind in his rent and taxes on the property (upwards of $250,000). Thankfully the staff truly cares about their course because John Kouvas certainly does not!
There are some minor improvements that could be made (carts, driving range, clubhouse etc..) but I'm not expecting John Kouvas to put another dime into the course (he can't even pay the rent for gods sake)
From my understanding there are a few new people looking into purchasing the landmark course, hopefully that happens and Old Avalon can be restored to what it once was, one of the premier golf courses in the area.
Avalon south is still a beautiful golf course nonetheless, its a true landmark of Warren and a small diamond in the rough (no pun intended). It could and will be a whole lot better as soon as John Kouvas loses it for good and the city gives another owner the chance to purchase it and restore it to its glory it once possessed. John Kouvas is too deep in dept with the course and his undesirable restaurant across the street from Avalon "The Chophouse" which should be called the "Slophouse" but I don't expect Kouvas to have that too much longer either due to huge debt and his total lack of restaurant knowledge.
Let us all pray for new owners of Avalon South golf course to bring it back to its original glory and prestigiousness because it is a true landmark and deserves owners that care and can afford to make it what it once was.
